The Kaiser Family Foundation reports that since January, when Georgia began requiring families to produce documents of their income (pay stub, W-2 form, income tax return), many Hispanic children in Georgia have been denied Medicaid coverage because their parents cannot provide the required documentation. The DREAM Act would provide a pathway to legality for college-ready high school graduates who are undocumented or illegal. "...isn't it ironic that undocumented immigrants are able to obtain a tax ID # and pay taxes (as most do), yet they dont see the benefits of these? We are not taking away anything from legal citizens, we just want fair treatment and immigration reform so that we can continue to contribute to this country, my homeland." The Washington Post is reporting that thousands of people rallied yesterday in opposition to legislative efforts to stop the flow of undocumented workers across our border with Mexico. I’m pretty sure the numbers reported are correct. It seemed like the crowds I walked through last evening on my way to a class at the Botanic Garden were pretty large -- lots of families, lots of children and young people. |
