Thank you very much for approving this article on our organization the Art Therapy Connection. I would like to address the label of "at-risk". Our organization is based on Adlerian therapy and as licensed and registered art therapists we steer away from labeling children negatively or otherwise. The children we work have been referred to us because they are at-risk of failure emotionally, socially or academically. Art Therapy Connection strives to empower children at an early age through personal expression and creativity using art therapy. Art Therapy is used as the method of intervention because “art is a child’s language of expression”. It can help children build a bridge between their inner world and the world around them. The process of making art and talking about it gives children a means to express and release thoughts and feelings that they might not be able to verbalize. Ideally the art therapy process leads to attitudinal and/or behavioral change. As children take ownership of the art they have created, they also learn to take responsibility for how they create meaning in their lives. Creating art reminds children that they are not helpless and can learn to make new and useful choices for their lives. This has a positive impact on their lives, which then makes a positive impact on the lives of those around them.
