Add new commentby: Hershel Sarbin, Child Advocacy 360 Because I have a strong belief in the power of community action and citizen engagement in all areas of child well-being, I constantly comb major Websites and print publications for relevant Real People, Real Results stories to share with Connect for Kids readers.
I pass these positive stories and insights on to supporters of my own Foundation, Child Advocacy 360, and a growing list of friends across the country who share my passion for good news that has the potential to inspire us all to act, wherever we live. Just a few days ago, reading the latest issue of Voice from Casey Family Servicesa compact, easy to read journal with striking stories of Who’s Doing What That Works in foster careI asked myself, as always, “How many people, professionals and caring, thinking citizens are really are exposed to this information?” My information from Casey Family Services indicates that only 5,000 copies of Voice are printed quarterly, and therein lies the bottleneck. Not that Casey should print more copiesnot at allbut that the information simply doesn’t find its way into mainstream press or mainstream online distribution. The masters of Web communication and online publishing in the for-profit world urge us to let smart content go far and wide without restriction, but always a link to source. For information providers who want to make a difference, that seems absolutely intuitive. At Connect for Kids, we distill, digest, and publish for our 20,000 subscribers, and virtually shout, “PASS IT ON!”knowing that we have barely scratched the surface. How do we break through to a much larger public? Well, we do have a plan, working through communication executives in larger organizations, that I will put forth in my next column. And meanwhile, I welcome your thoughts. Send them to hsarbin@gmail.com.
