Triangle Shirtwaist Fire (1911)

On March 25, 1911, a fire broke out in this New York City sweatshop. More than 140 people, mostly young women and girls, were killed. This tragic event brought attention to the unsafe working conditions faced by children and represents one small step on the path to child labor laws.

On April 4, 1861, the Board of Commissioners of the Charleston Orphan House revised and adopted its by-laws. The Charleston Orphan House was founded in 1790.
