Maulid al-Nabi is the birthday of the Islamic Prophet Muhammed. He was born in Mecca in 570 AD. He was a sherpard, and trader for the first part of his life. At the age of 42 he received a visit from the Angel Gabriel. After which, Muhammed under Devine guideance, wrote the Qur'an, founded Islam, and politically united the Arab tribes. His birthday is celebrated with fireworks and by gift giving.

On April 18, 1906, San Francisco experienced what has come to be known as the “great earthquake.” The San Francisco Board of Education immediately ordered the segregation of 73 Japanese students attending the city’s public schools, joining Chinese students who had been segregated since 1869. Backlash from the Japanese government and Japanese parents led to the involvement of President Theodore Roosevelt in finding a solution.
