On June 1, 2005, The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), held a briefing to release its annual collection of education statistics, The Condition of Education 2005. Grover J. Whitehurst, the Director of Institute of Education Sciences, and Acting Commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics presented the report, which is mandated by congress and is due June 1, of every year.

Event: Conference Call on Mental Health and Educational Outcomes of Foster Alumni and the Northwest Foster Alumni Study

Researchers for the Northwest Foster Alumni study said they started with a basic question -- how well were foster youth, who were maltreated as children, faring as adults? Alumni surveyed for the study had spent one or more years during their adolescence in foster care. Some were placed as young children, some older. Two-thirds were from Oregon or Washington state. Almost all youth served by Casey Family Programs were served by the state previously. The results? Overall, children do well when they experience a stable foster family placement, good educational services, good mental health treatments, and opportunities to have supports while they transition to adulthood after foster care.

The briefing, sponsored by Girls Incorporated in conjunction with the Congressional Caucus on Women's Issues, provided an in-depth look into how violence affects girls in their homes, schools, communities, and relationships.

The results of a wide-ranging survey on youth and religion were released today. The report, "OMG! How Generation Y is Redefining Faith in the iPod Era," compares and contrasts the religious identities of 18- to 25-year-old Catholics, Protestants, Jews and Muslims. The survey was conducted with 1385 total respondents; Muslim, Jewish, Asian, African American and Hispanic youth were oversampled to achieve more accurate results.
