Despite improvements in the wage gap, women's wages barely cover housing and other necessary family expenses -- even toward the middle of the income spectrum, according to the McAuley Institute. More than one in four mother-headed families live in overcrowded or severely substandard housing, or pay over a half of their incomes for housing.
