The First Years Institute

The First Years Institute is a catalyst to strengthen the community by building well-researched high quality support systems essential to enable children to be competently nurtured - physically, emotionally and cognitively - from gestation through the preschool years, and for families and caregivers to be valued and supported in accomplishing this task.

First Years Institute is a 5-year-old community collaborative in Memphis working to improve the health and welfare for children in Shelby County, prenatal to age 5. The organization is supported by Memphis City and Shelby County government, health care, business, education and child care communities. FYI is not a program-based organization, but rather it identifies and builds initiatives that support the goals identified in FYI's Blueprint for Community Change, a long-term communitywide mission to improve early child development. FYI was a driving force behind the recent State approval for Pre-K education in Tennessee and has been a catalyst for numerous high-impact early development initiatives in Shelby County, the largest municipal area in Tennessee.
