On August 24, 1955, Emmett Till, a Chicago teenager visiting relatives in Money, Mississippi, stopped in Bryant’s Grocery and Meat Market with a group of friends. The African American youth allegedly spoke or whistled at Carolyn Bryant, the white proprietor. Till was abducted and killed. His body was found in the Tallahatchie river on August 31st. Although arrests were made, no convictions resulted. The widespread publicity and outrage contributed to the growth of the civil rights movement.
