Orphan Trains (1854)

On September 20, 1854, 46 children left New York City on the first Orphan Train, heading to Dowagiac, Michigan to be placed with families. Organized by the Children’s Aid Society, the Orphan Trains carried more than 120,000 children to new homes in 45 states until the early 1900s.
