Innovative Approaches in Civil Rights and Education: The Link Between Data-driven Decisionmaking and Promising Practices is presented by the Alliance for Excellent Education and the Civil Rights Working Group.

This panel discussion will focus on the important links between data-driven decisionmaking and promising practices in the effort to close the student achievement gap.

Keynote speaker: Paul Vallas, Chief Executive Officer for the School District of Philadelphia.

Other presenters will include:
• Michael Holzman, Ph.D., Consultant to the Schott Foundation, to illustrate the importance of data in understanding and further developing promising educational practices.
• Claire E. Sylvan, Ed.D., Executive Director, Internationals Network for Public Schools, who will talk about Internationals’ development and support of a network of International High Schools that serve late-entry immigrant English-language learners.
• Representatives from the Using Data Project—which provides professional development experiences and sustained learning opportunities to help educational leaders develop the skills, knowledge, and abilities to effectively use science and mathematics student learning data to improve programs, policies, and learning in all classrooms—will talk about how the program is working in Canton, Ohio.
