KIDS COUNT 2008: A CFK Overview

The annual KIDS COUNT Data Book offers both data and context for 10 indicators of child well-being—and drills down to a state and local level. This year’s essay offers a “roadmap for reform” in juvenile justice. CFK summer intern Maria Allen attended the June 2008 launch event in DC and has this overview.

Addressing the Health Care Needs of Foster Care Children

Children who have been abused or neglected often have a range of unique physical and mental health needs and developmental delays, far greater than other high-risk populations. In fact, studies suggest that nearly sixty percent of children in foster care experience a chronic medical condition, and one-quarter suffer from three or more chronic health conditions.

Data Resource Center (DRC) for Child and Adolescent Health

The DRC can be used to identify and compare the health and health needs of children and youth. It provides asy-to-understand tables and graphs that users can download to (1) stimulate and inform state and community improvement partnerships, (2) educate program leaders, policymakers, and the public, (3) build data literacy, and (4) inform research and grant development.

Treating Allergic Reactions at School

A Canadian teenager went into anaphylactic shock after kissing her boyfriend who had eaten a peanut butter sandwich nine hours earlier. The much-publicized story (it made the cover of People magazine, for example) has drawn attention to the severity of allergies, especially in young people. Kids with life-threatening allergic reactions sometimes require treatment at school, and parents may neglect to inform school officials of these severe allergies, say researchers. Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has signed new legislation offering children's health coverage on a sliding scale -- a move that has put the state on the map for making children's health insurance affordable for the broadest population.
