But historian Peter Bardaglio says that several essays in a new book, Before the New Deal: Social Welfare in the South, 1830-1930, demonstrate how Southern women built lasting programs for children and families in communities deformed by slavery and devastated by war.

Charlotte's Long Bus Ride

In 1957, Dorothy Counts was one of four black students to enter previously all-white schools in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1971, Charlotte became the first city in the country to use court-ordered busing to fully desegregrate its schools.
