The number of children with a parent behind bars has soared to over 2 million in recent years. A small but growing number of programs are addressing the problem of how to keep parent-child relationships alive through the years of incarceration. Chris Dickon reports on one, the Messages Project in Virginia.

Kids do better when they have good dads, but what does it mean to be a good dad? Dads Unlimited, a new initiative shaped by educator and father Allan Shedlin based on the results of thousands of hours of interviews with dads and kids, hopes to support good "daddying" beginning with parenting consulting and school-home liaison services. He is offering pro bono consulting at local family clinics.

According to this survey, most parents say today's America is a difficult environment in which to raise kids. Parents tend to worry more about protecting their children from negative social influences than about paying the bills or having enough family time together.

The United Press International reports on research indicating that middle-class kids may experience difficulty as they hit seventh grade-including increased anxiety, depression and beginning substance abuse. Researchers cite two possible causes: increased academic pressures and feeling isolated from parents.
