Quality child care matters for kids and parents—just ask single mother Marla Campos, who spends $900 a month for child care. Although her two daughters are eligible for state-subsidized child care, they are among the more than 360,000 kids nationally who are stuck on state waiting lists because there isn’t enough funding. In California, the parent-led activist organization Parent Voices is working to change this.

In the 1990s, an increasing proportion of poor children were living with working parents, but that trend has reversed. In 2001, the percent of poor children living with working parents fell to 40 percent compared with 43 percent in 2001, according to this February 2003 report by the Child Trends DataBank.

This bilingual initiative serves Hispanic girls ages 9-14, their mothers and other caregivers. A public education initiative, it is designed to help them build and enhance their own self-esteem, mental health, decision-making and assertiveness skills, and to prevent the harmful consequences of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs.
