The day-long White House Conference on Helping America's Youth, held last Thursday at Howard University in Washington, D.C., was a high-profile culmination of First Lady Laura Bush's interest in efforts to keep teens and young adults on track. Connect for Kids' Jan Richter spoke with youth advocates about the conference, and about what we can do for this sometimes hard-to-help group. Even with failed teen voting bills on each coast in Cambridge, Mass., and Berkeley, Calif., student activists haven't lost their passion for lowering the voting age. Here, Connect for Kids highlights Children's PressLine's coverage of the issue. When Connect for Kids began in 1996, child advocacy and nonprofit organizations were just becoming acquainted with the Internet. Everyone was learning to use terms like "interactive" and "browser." Today, nonprofit Web sites dedicated to the well-being of children are springing up around the world. At a recent workshop in Berlin, Germany, Connect for Kids' Cecilia Garcia learned first-hand about some of them. The National Collaboration for Youth (NCY) is a coalition of the National Assembly member organizations that have a significant interest in youth development. Members of the National Collaboration for Youth include more than fifty national, non-profit, youth development organizations. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world, with 153,000 members. NASW works to enhance the professional growth and development of its members, to create and maintain professional standards, and to advance sound social policies. |
