Surfing the Sites - Real People, Real Results in Child Advocacy

One of my great pleasures as an editor is to periodically "surf the sites" in child advocacy. I often find what to me, at least, are fresh stories of good works and good results that serve as an inspiration for my work at Child Advocacy 360 and Connect for Kids. RuralSuccess.org has several winning examples.

Risk and Protective Factors of Pennsylvania’s Youth

Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children finds that many teens feel unrecognized and unsupported by their teachers and parents. A survey of sixth, eighth, tenth and twelfth graders found that 45 percent feel they’re not praised by teachers for good work, that their teachers do not tell parents about good work, and that they do not feel safe in school. A third of young respondents said they don’t feel strong enough family attachments to share thoughts and feelings with parents.

After-School All-Stars

Kids who have no place to go end up going nowhere. Kids with some place to go end up going places.

Every day in the United States as many as 15 million children leave school with no place to go. And every day many of these children are involved in crimes, join gangs, or experiment with drugs, alcohol or sex.

After-School All-Stars offers a proven alternative for middle school children. We engage them in activities and on-going relationships that increase confidence and encourage success in all areas of their lives - at home, in school and in the community.
