Youth crime is down nationwide, but you wouldn't know it from today's headlines. According to a recent study by the Casey Journalism Center, stories of crime and violence dominate news coverage of kids. We asked three teen reporters from Children's Pressline in New York how they feel about the media's portrayal of kids.

Through photographs and words, five young people who have been through the juvenile justice system in California offer a kaleidoscope of thoughts on where they have been and where they are headed. This project by Brooklyn photographer Joseph Rodriguez also includes Rodriguez' own journey through the system as a young man in Brooklyn. This is the first web site included in the Human Rights Watch High School Pilot Program. Click on "Human Rights Watch" which is lsted on the left side of the screen.
Young people in the rural Upper Peninsula area of Michigan are taking on the roles of both learners and leaders through their work with 8-18 Media, a youth journalism project based in Marquette. Learn about their efforts, and read an example of 8-18 Media's work.
